FAQ
Do I need to be physically present for my document to be notarized?
Yes, for the notarization to be valid, the signer must be physically present during the appointment. The notary must witness your signature to confirm that you are signing willingly and with full understanding.
Can I have a document notarized for someone who isn’t available in person?
No, notarization requires the presence of the individual signing the document. If someone cannot be present, they will need to schedule their own notarization appointment or use a power of attorney.
What happens if there’s a mistake in my document after it’s notarized?
Once a document is notarized, the notary cannot make corrections or alter the document. If an error is found, a new document will need to be drafted and notarized again.
What is the difference between an Acknowledgment and a Jurat?
- An Acknowledgment is used when the signer confirms that they signed the document voluntarily. The notary does not need to witness the signature itself but verifies the identity of the signer.
- A Jurat requires the signer to swear or affirm that the information in the document is true. The notary must witness the signature and administer an oath or affirmation to the signer.
Can you notarize documents for use in other countries?
Yes, we can notarize documents for international use. However, these documents may also require an apostille or further certification, depending on the receiving country’s requirements.
Is remote online notarization available?
Currently, California does not allow remote online notarization (RON). All notarizations must be performed in person by a licensed notary public.
How do I prepare for my notary appointment?
To ensure a smooth process, please:
- Have all your documents ready for review.
- Bring a valid form of identification (driver’s license, passport, etc.).
- Ensure any witnesses required for the notarization are present.
- If unsure about any details, feel free to contact us before your appointment.
What happens if I need to reschedule or cancel my appointment?
We understand that things change. Please notify us as soon as possible if you need to reschedule or cancel. A travel fee may apply if the cancellation is made less than one hour before the appointment.
Can a notary refuse to notarize my document?
Yes, a notary can refuse to notarize a document if:
- The signer cannot provide proper identification.
- The notary believes the signer does not understand what they are signing or is being coerced.
- The document is incomplete or appears fraudulent.
